The embodiment of personal freedom – life, liberty and rock n’ roll – is undoubtedly the MeanStreet Riders. With the release of their debut album “High on the Hog,” on Sept 13th, these motorcycle riding, freedom-loving songwriters have turned their passion for the freedom and the open road into an album of Country-tinged, pure American rock n’ roll. Accompanying the release of their album is a rockumentary short film documenting their inspired story.
The MeanStreet Riders were formed in 2008 by a group of Florida-based songwriters who shared a mutual passion for riding motorcycles and freedom. What started out as an adventurous ride through the southern United States, culminating at the ”Dragon” an 11-mile stretch of road with 318 curves on the Tennessee /North Carolina border on US Highway 129. It was on this trip that Shannon Wallace, (guitars/vocals); Dowlin Mayfield, (guitars/vocals); Greg Torres, (keyboards/vocals); Eric Lampley, (bass/vocals); and Kevin LaCour, (drums/vocals) turned a motorcycle road trip into a life-changing musical journey that extends far beyond that legendary stretch of asphalt.
From the authentic, guitar-driven, Blues-Rock title track, High on the Hog that tells the tale of camaraderie and individuality – to the heartfelt ballad Rolling On which regales the rebellious spirit of the characters played Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in the classic motorcycle movie, “Easy Rider” – MeanStreet Riders’ sound runs the gamut of American Rock, Country and Blues.
The Riders incorporate their own experiences on the road into their music. For example, I’ve Had a Good Ride is a harmony-rich song based on a return to the infamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held in Sturgis, South Dakota. The Country-tinged, acoustic track Where I Was Born tells the tale of a father sharing a ride with his two sons across rural America.

Harley Girl says The MeanStreet Riders sound a lot like the Eagles. I also heard a little Molly Hatchet influence and there was a bluesy Allman Brothers feel too. I would recommend this CD as a travel enhancement for your next ride since the songs are very motorcycle and riding related. It would also be a great CD to add into your next party music rotation. After listening to the CD multiple times I found myself singing along.

The MeanStreet Riders stop by the National Motorcycle Museum

The MeanStreet Riders were recently in Anamosa Iowa for the J&P Cycles open house and had a chance to drop a copy of their album and see some incredible history of motorcycling at the National Motorcycle Museum. Some of the bikes on display were the original Capt America bike from Easy Rider given to Dan Haggerty that was used in the final sequence of the film, Steve McQueen’s 1947 Indian Chief complete with sleeping bag, Indian Larrys designs and Evel Knievel’s XR 250 HD and AMA flat track and ambassador the sport racer John Tibbens bike and original leather and many other great vintage bikes.We wanted to thank Jessica Gorman office manager for extending a great time to us.

The MeanStreet Riders are getting involved with raising funds to keep the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum rolling on for years to come.They recently donated downloads of “I’ve Had a Good Ride” their song written about Sturgis and the bandlands for downloads with all proceeds going to the museum. Bill Dern the band’s manager said “Were proud to help so a great cause and tribute to some of the worlds best and first machines in the two wheeled world”.

MidLife Motorcycle Madness says You cannot pigeonhole their music into one safe genre or make a comparison to one other single popular band. The closest I could come up with to maybe compare them to would be the Eagles.Some of the songs have a definite Classic Rock style & sound and others have a more Modern Country or Americana type sound. A recent ride with the MeanStreet Riders in the NW Florida area was captured by photographer Michael Loftis.The Riders got a chance to pop the clutch, stretch their engines release some press photos and captured some road miles for inspiration for a few new songs.Truly theres no replacement for displacement for rock n roll on the open road. MSR band member Dowlin Mayfield and publicist MeanStreet Mary had a chance to say hello to their friend and author and TV show developer Edward Winterhalder at his book signing at Barnes and Noble. Edward has developed the TV Shows “Biker Chicz” and is currently developing “Livin on the Edge” starring Lorenzo Lamas. Edward has written many books in riding community including “ All Roads Lead to Sturgis” and “Biker Chicz”.
The Riders also had a chance to catch up and drop of a the new album with woman rider and author Cris Sommer Simmons and see "Effie" her 1915 Harley Davidson 3 speed that just finished the Cannonball run from Kitty Hawk NC to Santa Monica Ca. Cris is also married to Doobie Bros band member Patrick Simmons who’s a rider as well!
Dowlin Mayfield singer with MSR got a chance to look over new Harley Davidson CVO models with friend SE Regional HOG manager Bruce Motta at the HarleyDavidson tent on main st and also dropped of a copy to Michael Ballard owner of Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis and star of the TruTV Television show Full Throttle Saloon.
The band was also able to visit with Dan Stuckenschneider and David Uhl from UHL studios who created the MeanStreet Riders logo and dropped off copies of the album. Eric Buelle CEO of Buelle Racing got a chance to say hello to MSR publicist Mary and Dowlin Mayfield at the Daytona Speedway infield while watching 180 mph plus bike racing.The guys also stopped by and said hello to and Eric Stephens CEO of Twisted Throttle, LLC and got a chance to drop off a the album and visit at the Twister Throttle trailer at Daytona Speedway.
Destination Daytona was the next stop when Dowlin Mayfield ran into Gerald Rhinehart CEO of Rhinehart Racing. Gerald and Dowlin got a chance to visit about what the bands plans were and listen to the new MeanStreet Riders album.MSR has allways dug that Rhinehart sound and pipes! The world famous Rats Hole bike show was the last stop where the guys got to meet and visit bike builder and motorcycle blogger Cyril Huse while checking out the bikes. We appreciated Cyril waiting on us and hope he enjoys his copy of the new MSR album.We also got a chance to meet womans clothier desighner and owner of "Rebel Girl" apparel Cher Bell who invited us over to see her display at the Expo center across from the Rats Hole Bike show. It was an awesome display! Thanks so much Cher!
